Seminar: Integration of Zebrafish Laboratories into Institution's Animal Care Program Host: AALAS National Meeting, Coordinator
Start Time: 14:15 End Time: 17:00
Location: Indiana Convention Center, Indianapolis, IN Map:

Description

Integration of Zebrafi sh Laboratories into an Institution’s

Animal Care Program

2:15 p.m.–5:00 p.m.

Room: Sagamore Ballroom 3

Leader: Karen L Krueger

Moderator: Christian Lawrence

Facilitator: Marie A Ortega

Over the past several decades, zebrafi sh have become mainstream laboratory

animals, and are now part of the great majority of biomedical research

programs in the U.S. and beyond. Despite this, zebrafi sh are typically not

very well integrated into institutional animal care programs. Zebrafi sh facilities

in many institutions are still commonly being run by investigators,

as independent entities, with litt le involvement in the animal care program.

As both the number of investigators using the model and the array

of sophisticated techniques with which to employ them increases, there is

a growing need to close the gap in care and oversight between traditional

mammalian model animals and zebrafi sh. In this seminar, panelists from

fi ve diff erent institutions in the U.S., each employing diff erent strategies

of incorporating zebrafi sh into their animal care programs, will present

overviews of their respective approaches. Th e seminar will be designed to

facilitate lively discussion and participation by the audience so that the

strengths and weaknesses of each management style can be highlighted

by real-life examples, and movement towards a common strategy can be

initiated. Th e panelists will give 20-minute presentations that provide an

overview of how zebrafi sh are integrated into their institutional animal

care programs. A template for this presentation, based upon the Guide for

the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, will be developed and employed

to ensure that presentations diff er only in their depictions of the programs

themselves.

Concepts in Feeding and Nutrition Host: Children's Hospital Boston, Coordinator
Start Time: 12:00 End Time: 02:00
Location: Children's Hospital Boston Karp 9th Floor Conference Room Map:

Description The Zebrafish Husbandry Association will be holding its next meeting on June 11, 2008 from 12-2 pm. This meeting will be our first special topic discussion, where meeting participants bring their experience to the table to discuss a variety of subjects relevant to the field of zebrafish husbandry and care.

The topic of the discussion is “Concepts in Feeding and Nutrition”. A list of member submitted questions and comments on this subject will be used as starting points for discussion. The meeting will be moderated to maximize participation and to ensure that various perspectives are introduced.

In order to gather some information to set a baseline for the meeting, you are invited to respond to three [3] short surveys regarding feeding and diet (the links are below). These surveys should take only a few minutes to complete. The results will be sent to the members prior to the June meeting.
